Financial and Investing

Hoovers (5), This site has many useful tools, but some require membership fees. Try the "corporate home pages" feature. The search engine there is quite good, however the page is shown in reduced size, so Hoovers can advertise on the screen you are trying to view. You can get quotes on stocks, and company news releases. You can even create your own portfolio, and check corporate job listings.

Free Stock Quotes (DBC). A good site for stock quotes and price charts. The home page is overwhelming and non-professional looking, but forget it, and put in a stock symbol, and then you will get the action for today, but you can click on a number of good options to see fundamental information, charts and more-- note the many choices in the far left window.

Wall Street Journal. The home page of the famous daily financial paper, the Wall Street Journal. Useful stories and features, so browse around. Most of the heavy-duty features of this site require registration, but that is offered free for the first two weeks as a trial. After that, there is a fee to use the best research features of the site.

Business Week (4) The home page of the famous magazine, Business Week. Links to stories.

Charles Schwab. (5) Home page of the discount broker. Site features an on-line magazine, a link to the e-Schwab feature where you can trade your stocks on-line or check your portfolio balances, and many more features. This is a truly useful site for some serious investors, or just curious browsers.

Fidelity Mutual Funds (4) Home page of the large and famous Fidelity Mutual Funds company. Good for customers and browsers alike..

Financial Consultant. (4) This is the home page of a Columbia, SC financial consultant, Skip Weldon, who sells no products and works on a fee-only basis for his clients. He has a nice link on the site: "Skip's Money Rules". This is such a good, solid, statement, that I highly recommend that you read it, no matter how long you have been investing. You can print it out to give to friends, or just to have for future reference. Skip will also take questions via e-mail right from the web site.

Quicken/NetWorth (5) A Quicken site, with 500,000 registered users. Registration is free, and necessary to access the very valuable Morningstar Mutual Fund reports. This site is very strong --- has personal portfolios, page links for many mutual fund families, recommended fund selector (very good feature, with many options). Summary: this is a complete Financial Network! Don't miss it.

Merrill Lynch The official Merrill Lynch home page for clients. You can look up a stock quote (works well), or, if you are registered properly, you can look at your Merrill Lynch Account balances and more. Other features on the page assist investors by providing information of all sorts.

CNN Money A pretty good site with an interesting mutual fund "finder" option. While it might not find the fund you want, just answering the questions will make you think seriously about what you are really looking for.

MorningStar Mutual Funds (5) A generous free site featureing the famous Morningstar Reports on various mutual funds. Just register, and it is free. You can check a "no e-mail or mailed brochure" block, so the registration will not cause you any extra stuff to deal with. If you have mutual funds, or want to buy some, this site is a "must". No better information available anywhere.

Inflation Calculator A great working website to calculate the "inflation adjusted" value of an investment in the past (like a house) to this year (or any prior year). For example, the US Postage stamp first class mail, was $ .10 in 1974, and if you put those two numbers in, and then ask it for the inflation adjusted price in 2001, you get $ .38 . The actual price of a stamp in 2001 was $ .33, so First Class US Postage has not kept up with inflation. That is, it is a "bigger bargain now than it was in 1974".

The Cost of Living Calculator is a handy tool to compare the cost of living from year to year.

City by City Cost of Living is another calculator that is useful if you are thinking of taking a job in another city.

The Consumer Price Index A popular "what's a dollar worth" calculator compares this year to last year -- or any other year.

The Most Requested Consumer Price Index Numbers   can be found here.

How to find a lower interest credit card :
Bankrate.com A 5 star site
Getsmart.com A 5 star site
LowCards.com A 4 star site
Quicken.com A 4 star site
Creditnet.com A 3 star site
These site's offer useful advice and calculators, weekly national rates, and special search engines to find the lowest interest rate cards. Other features: finding the best card for a person based on credit history. Having a low interest rate card (there are some with 8.25%) would pay about $6,147 total to pay off a $5,000 balance (62 payments). With a more typical 18% card rate, the same $5,000 balance would take 92 payments and cost a total of $9,311. You could save $3,000 or likely much more, by having the lower card rate.
