Search Engines of a General Nature:

Google Google is largely regarded as the best search engine on the web. Several magazines such as Forbes 'Best of the Web' give Google their highest rating. Google is fast, and reasonably accurate, used first, it often does the entire job for you. If it doesn't, follow up with All The Web and if that doesn't give good results, try IPIXquick.

All The Web This site searches very fast, and delivers interesting and clear results. I often use this search engine right after Google-- because it often returns different results (at least in the first 5 pages) and sometimes better results.

Alta Vista (5) This is one of the most popular sites on the WWW, and it has many features we are all just learning how to use. Don't forget the (+) sign between words helps tell the search you want both words included.

Excite (5) This site is one of our favorites, it is fast, and the searches are rated by percentage. If you haven't tried this one, do so now.

Yahoo (5) The oldest and most famous of the search engines, but it may no longer be the best. You judge. The Hoover's option for corporate searches is very interesting, however, and there are many sub-features that, once you learn them, can be very helpful.

Search (3.8) A supplemental search engine, a few good features like searching for stock prices. Try some of the links.

SCIway - A comprehensive directory of South Carolina Web sites.

Copernic This search engine requires a small download, but it doesn't interfere with anything that Internet Explorer does, so it is safe. Choose the free version until you are sure you want to pay for the extras. I have found the free version quite adequate. This search engine tries ten or more other search engines -- but does so on the Copernic computer, which is faster than doing the same kind of search on your own computer with a search engine such as Dogpile. It also highlights the words you chose in yellow, and has other features. While similar to www.ixquick.com, it does have some differences.

IXquick Ixquick is a metasearch engine that was given the highest ratings by both Search Engine Watch and ZDNet's SearchIQ. Ixquick.com has a number of powerful features such as outstanding search relevancy (find what you're looking for immediately), comprehensive results (searches 12 engines simultaneously), fast response, advanced syntax support, web, picture, news and MP3 category searches, and one dozen languages are supported.

MSN Search While this is not as good, in my opinion, as some (or all) of the others mentioned above, to make the list of list of search engines complete, it is probably necessary to include the Microsoft Network version.

Search From A to Z This site lists many specific search engines, some in foreign languages. This could be a major resource for those seeking something very specific that doesn't come up on normal searches by Google, for example.

Search Engines for People and Phone Numbers:

WhitePages.Com   A very reliable source of information used by many professionals. You can find a name and then ask for a map to the house or business...a very nice feature.

Real Pages.com  The official site of Southern Bell in some areas. This is particularly useful, has nice search features, and also draws maps to homes where the phone is connected. You can edit your own listing if you like and add profile information if you choose to tell the world more about yourself. A new feature at this site, if you will down load a 1 MB file (free I think) it will allow you to view the white and yellow pages as if you had the phone book in front of you. This is a huge feature since surely the new phone books have print that is too small, and are heavy, bulky and hard to handle. Not to mention they usually only cover one city. I can see the day when they will only hand out paper phone books if you ask for one. Think of the trees it would save, not to mention the cost in freight and printing. I think this has been the norm in some European countries for years, they don't have the trees to waste on phone book printing (every year, no less).

AnyWho is an excellent search engine for finding phone numbers and addresses, but you can also do reverse look up of an address or phone to see who it belongs to.

Four11 (4.8) A top rated search engine for phone numbers, e-mail addresses -- both individuals and businesses. Check it out, try some of the links.

WhoWhere A good way to look up toll free (1-800) numbers, government phone numbers, personal and business numbers, e-mail addresses, and even has some classified ads (but don't bother, they load slowly).

Switchboard Finder for people, businesses, try the people search, it is amazing. With just the name, like "James F Belk", you can find many people all over the US with that name, and their address and phone numbers, with a wait of only 2 or 3 seconds. How do they do that? Try your name, you will be surprised at the results.

IAF An Internet address finder.

Big Book Information on 16 million businesses in the US, MAPS -- very awesome. Click on the link to the maps, then put in your home address, you will be amazed at how fast it draws an accurate map, puts an "X" on your house, labels the streets, and even allows you to zoom in for a closer look. With downloaded additional plug-ins, you can even see 3-D views of your town, and more. The more time you spend on this site, the more things you find to play with.

Zip Code Lookup Zip code lookup provided by US Postal Service.

Reverse Lookup Reverse lookup -- for example, if you didn't catch a person's name, but you know where they live, just enter the street number, city and state and it finds their full name. This solves those mysteries of life such as "what was that person's last name?". If you have a few pieces of the puzzle, this will find the rest. Site is uncluttered and is easy to use as well. Hint -- don't add "Trail", or "Road" to an address unnecessarily, it might be TRL (for Trail) in the master computer, and if you spell out Trail, it might not find it. That happened and frustrated me for a few minutes. Just leave off the Trail, Road, or Lane first, to see if that works before adding TRL, or RD, or Trail.

Intelius People Search  Find people throughout the USA and other services like background checks.

Employer Search Search for someone's employer, but only covers 600 employers, and there may be fees attached for searches.

World Pages" -- Find a Business or a Person This is similar to Switchboard, but is powerful and nice. For example, to find all businesses with the name Boozer in SC, enter Boozer and SC and in one second you will see 12 businesses with that name, including the phone numbers ! And, with one more click, you will see the maps and driving directions. This example search contained businesses with our family name that I had never heard of. Try it with your business, you might be surprised as well. This could be very useful if you need to find a business in a State knowing only part of the business name. I grade this site an "A".

Yellow Page Lookup for Businesses At this site, a sort of Yellow Page lookup for businesses, the start up page appears to kick back to the worldpages site above when it finds results. But it might be useful in some way I haven't discovered yet.

Web Domain Lookup A site where you can see if a web domain name is already registered.
